DETAILS:
Makamakaole Stream "13 Crossings"

Where:       Past Waihe'e and before Kahakuloa on Highway 340

Length:      2.5+/- Miles (Round Trip)

Time:          2-2 1/2 hours

Difficulty: 3 of 5 (5 being most difficult)

Elevation: 813 ft

Parking:    Very Limited along road

Security:   No

The Makamakaole Stream runs down the north slope of West Maui, one of the least developed regions of our island.

This hike is nicknamed "13 Crossings," because that is the number of times the trail crosses the stream through a bamboo forest before the trail ends at a waterfall.

The trail head is located 8/10 mile west of mile marker 7 on highway 340 (except we're told that Mile markers "6" and "7" are often reported as missing -- so we need to drive 2.8 miles past mile marker "5" on highway 340). There is room for 2-3 cars to park right at the entrance to the trail head 3 cars about 100 feet before and 3 cars 100 feet after the trailhead.

We are told that the GPS noted the coordinates for this "parking location" as: N 20 57.500 W156 32.085 (elevation 813 ft.) for anyone interested
