La Perouse Bay on Maui is located on the southwest corner of the island, and is an incredibly beautiful location for swimming, snorkeling and hiking in the early hours of the day. The La Perouse Bay was named after the French explorer Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Perouse, who mapped the area in 1786.   According to legend, the bay was once haunted by Huaka I po or the Night Marchers who caused mischief at night.  It is absolutely beautiful -- bring your camera!

Time:    8:30 am

Please be on time as we’ll leave the parking lot by 8:45.

Wear:   Hiking shoes or good sneakers (no slippers, etc.)

The A'a lava here can be pretty sharp.

Directions: Take Kihei Road (31) going south past Makena State Park.

From there we continue 5 miles through the Ahini-Kinau Natural Area Reserve to La Perouse Bay.

Park where the road ends.  We'll meet at marked trailhead south side of the parking lot.

Length:  Our path will take us 2+/- miles each way - total 4+/- miles.

We'll start on the end of the road at La Perouse Bay and the start of the Hoapili Trail (King's Trail). Then after a 1/2 mile or so on the King's Trail we will head toward Lighthouse Point and continue our hike along the ocean. For those of you who hiked this trail with us in the past, you'll remember that along the way there is a ocean wave fed pool that some hikers enjoyed. We'll take a break there before hiking down to the coral beach and vibrant salt ponds. This is always one of our most talked about hikes. We should be back at the La Perouse parking area by 12:30pm.
